What Is The Drunk Monkey?
The Drunk Monkey is my nickname for that part of your mind that provides that incessant, non-stop commentary, pretty much 24/7.
Others have different names for it… some people call it the monkey mind. Others refer to it as the lizard brain. And those names are well chosen, because the Drunk Monkey is definitely part of our animal biology and it does have a very legitimate job: to keep you safe and to keep you alive.
My objective in this article is not to discount the animal part of your brain, but, to make you aware of the fact that this part of your brain is the source of most of your problems in life. It’s great for survival, it’s terrible at thriving.
Up until now, The Drunk Monkey has done a wonderful job, but enough is enough. The fact that you are reading these words validates that you are ready to transcend the insanity of The Drunk Monkey and start thriving.
The mistake that you made early in life is believing that you ARE The Drunk Monkey. Oops! Big mistake. You are NOT the thinking in your head. Let me prove my point.
Have you noticed that you can’t control the talking in your head most of the time? The Drunk Monkey thinks about stuff whether you want it to or not. Here’s the pivot I want to help you make. You are the one listening to the thinking in your head. The thinking isn’t who you are. Yet, I am confident that you have let your thoughts define you as a person. This has lead to endless frustration and negativity, because it is not true. Your thoughts do not define you. In other words, you have been living a lie and I want to prove it.
All this talking in your head is just a biological function. Just brain chemistry. Thinking is just energy moving through the neurons in your brain. You are not The Drunk Monkey, just like you are not your body: You are the one observing your body.
Think about it like this; You don’t beat your heart, do you? Do you maintain your balance? Do you digest food? No you don’t. These are automatic biological functions. Slow down for just a second and ponder this thought: “Your body operates independently of you. It is doing what it is doing without your input.”
Your mind, The Drunk Monkey, is also a part of your biology and it operates independently of you as well. Have you ever laid there at night wishing that your mind would stop talking so you can go to sleep? That’s The Drunk Monkey trying to sort out. It’s thinking about your past and your future whether you want it to or not.
The Drunk Monkey is not designed for building a life of happiness and success, it’s designed to keep you safe. It doesn’t help you enjoy a life of fulfilling relationships, financial success, or loving the body you have, because your Drunk Monkeys purpose is, not to help you be successful or enjoy life. Its purpose is to engineer a world that is safe.
But here’s the kicker: every single bit of your Drunk Monkey’s energy is designed to keep you safe in an environment that is not dangerous!
For example: Trying to achieve financial success is not dangerous, yet The Drunk Monkey decides that success is risky and discourages you from taking the actions to achieve your objectives. Your relationships are not dangerous either, yet, The Drunk Monkey will cause you to shut down and stop communicating with people you love. Are you getting this?
Plain and simple: The talking in your head is a non-stop survival machine that is relatively useless if you want to be happy and successful. The thoughts in your head are obsessed with mitigating risk. The problem you have is that your life is not actually dangerous, but the animal part of your brain is operating like it is. Thus you experience stress, anxiety and frustration in situations where objectivity, level-headedness and calm would serve you better.
It’s premeditating potential danger which makes you afraid of things that aren’t even coming. That darn Drunk Monkey is constantly examining the past and planning or worrying about the future. It is never here. And right here, right now is where the happiness is.
Just knowing that you have a Drunk Monkey is empowering. The more you see The Drunk Monkey at work in your life, the more happiness and success you will achieve.
Recognizing The Drunk Monkey, allows you to step back from your life and examine if stress, anxiety, overwhelm or any other negative feeling is really necessary. It gives you the power to let go of negative feelings and adopt productive positive ones instead.
Noticing you have a Drunk Monkey allows you to confront challenging situations and easily conquer them. Because you can see the truth of your situation and respond in an effective manner.
I hope you will join me on a quest to see your Drunk Monkey for what it really is and finally live a life of happiness and success.
