Is your focus making you a victim of the economy?

Monkey's got your back

The Drunk Monkey (your mind) is a survival machine. It’s job is to protect you from possible destruction. Therefore, it is totally addicted to the news. The news organizations have realized that sensationalized news hooks their viewers Drunk Monkeys.

The news has no commitment to truth. It has a commitment to making money which means “selling advertising”. The more viewers the news organizations have, the more money these companies make. Clearly, there is a natural pull towards the sensational verses the truth.  Blogging has only made this 100 times worse because blogging, like this blog, is just someone’s opinion.

“All opinions are vanities and have no intrinsic value and are actually the result of ignorance” says Dr. David Hawkins in his book The Eye of the I.

If you are going to feel good and make the best of the current economy, then you are going to have to give up your addiction to the news and your opinion about the news.

When you focus on what Obama is doing or which bank is going under, you move out of your center. These could be important factors in your decision-making about what strategy would make the best of this economy.  Yet, to become evangelistically opposed to stuff you’ve got no control over is only negatively impacting your own psyche.  If you listen to yourself and your friends talk about the news, you will hear yourself and others giving their opinion about things that make no difference and things they have no control over.

  • What do you want?
  • Where are you going?
  • What can you do?
  • What actions can you take now?
  • Who do you need help from?
  • What is a miracle you could take a stand for occurring?

To put your focus on these kinds of questions will make a profound difference.

To spend time pondering the news and how it might possibly negatively effect you is pathetic and the mindset of the victim. (Read that again please).

To spend time espousing your opinion over tax cuts, presidential spending and banks going under after the fact is completely ridiculous and only done by people committed to being stuck and spreading the illusion that they are not in control of their life.  Illusion not truth.

You are the creator of your experience, not the victim of your circumstances. You have the power to mold the circumstances of your life first with your attitude (your perspective) and second with your actions.

So what are you going to focus on?

3 ways to eliminate negativity

As the owner of a life coaching company I am constantly faced with the problem of helping very powerful and productive people get out of negativity.  Nothing kills your productivity faster then negativity.  Here are three suggestions the coaches and I are giving our clients.

1.  Stop watching the news.  The news does not have a commitment to the truth.  The news has a commitment to sensationalism which scares the crap out of people and keeps them glued to the TV.  Commercial media is a great strategy to sell commercials.  Not a great strategy for your happiness.  If something important is happening, the people in your life will be happy to share it with you.

2.  Stop reading the news on the internet.  Turn off that feature on your Google or Yahoo home page.  There is very little news that has any relevance to you and your personal life.  We have clients all over the world whose lives dramatically improve after they give up their news addiction.  Now, some of our clients’ business is dependent on the news.  In that case, we have other ways of fighting off the deliberate negativity.  Look for the post on the 10/10 visualization process.

3.  Stop seeking validation that life is bad and things aren’t good.  Quit asking your friends how bad things are.  Stop asking your friends how they are doing with their problems.  Start asking people about what solutions they are implementing to make their lives better.  This is not Pollyanna, it’s a practical way to stay focused on what you can do something about.

Today just notice how much The Drunk Monkey (your mind) loves negativity and pulls you towards it.  That’s it’s job.

An inspiring way to deal with bankruptcy and failure

Long time friend and client Carlos Justo had an epic rise to the top in Miami real estate and came crashing down into bankruptcy. In the spirit of contribution, he’s committed to using his own life as an example of how to deal with life’s ups and downs with grace and confidence.

To Be Empowered In A Time of Fear is Your Strategic Advantage

One of my clients is starting a new financial services company in the middle of what is likely the biggest financial melt down in history.  I asked him “How are you holding up?”  His response didn’t surprise me.

“I’m absolutely on fire right now!  I’m building a company designed for the new Wall Street.  I’ve made the decision to build a company who’s culture will nurture, support and inspire.  I’m committed to be the new model on Wall Street” he says emphatically.

He goes on to say, “Because of the work we are doing I am so inspired and lit up right now I’m like a light in the middle of the darkness.  People I never dreamed of are attracted to me because of my excitement and my enthusiasm.”

While everyone around him is falling apart and going into a state of despair, my client is focused on a future that has him empowered in the moment.

What is the future you are committed to bring into existence?  It’s your choice.  You are not the victim of your circumstances, you are the creator of your experience.  Notice I didn’t say you are the creator of your circumstances.  You are the creator of your experience.  The context with which you view your circumstances create your experience.

I request you learn to manage your point of view and become the creator of your experience.  It will make you rich beyond your wildest dreams in every area of your life.

Am I a victim of the financial markets or did I create this?

One of the wealthiest clients I have has been hit hard by the markets and, like many others, is concerned if he will even make it through.  He owns a boutique investment firm and is in the middle of an important inquiry, “Am I a victim of the markets or did I create this?”

I think this question is critical to resolve.  If you are unable to recognize that you are the creator of your experience, then you will go down with the rest.  The only responsible thing to say is “I created this, now I’m going to get myself out of it!”

Are there extreme external circumstances at play?  Yes.

Are there people who are thriving in this time of incredible financial disaster?  Yes.

Who is thriving right now?

People who have their internal resources available to them.  People who are not riddled with fear.  People who have gotten over the guilt of making financially devastating moves and re focused themselves on what they are committed to.

The future that you have in mind determines the moves you will make today.  If you allow yourself to obsess over the potential threat of a negative future, then you will pull that future towards yourself by operating consistent with it.

So, what are you committed to?  What future are you creating for yourself?

Keep working with your coach to stay out of the drama of possible negative futures and get your mind focused on a future of your choosing.

Head Trader Finds Inspiration When Everyone is Falling Apart

I just got off the phone with one of my very powerful clients.  He manages billions for a prominent fund.  When his boss sent an email saying “We’re going down in flames!”, my client responded with more power then he had ever expressed.

In the past my client would have been cautious about his response and probably held back a little.  But after a couple months of Inspired Action Coaching his response even surprised him.  In his mind, his response was a bold push back.  But his boss’ response was amazing!  My client’s email was circulated around the entire company and a special meeting was held to discuss the ideas he presented in his email.  This was a first.  As long as he could remember he was in the background wondering if he would ever be truly appropriated for his contribution.

I asked him “What has changed?”  His response was simple, “I am inspired.  I am feeling more fearless then ever.  My thoughts are important and I had to express them!”

Wow!  What a difference two months of coaching makes.  He’s only in the first phase of coaching which is the clean up phase.  He has been hard at work creating a new context for his life by seeing his past from a new point of view.  When you change your point of view, you change your actions.  When you change your actions you get new results.

I predict that the result of his new actions will lead him to a partnership position in one of the biggest funds in the world.  Stand by.  I’ll keep you posted.
