Recovering Success-aholic

As the economy squeezes most people today, many are rethinking their lives.  Many of my clients are discovering that they are success-aholics.  Addicted to the success that was so easy to achieve during the boom times.  Yet, now that things are different, life isn’t so easy and many are reconsidering their priorities.

Many success addicts find themselves working twice as hard for half the results today.  If that’s you, then it’s time to channel some of that energy into other areas of your life that will bear more fruit.

In my Inspired Action Coaching process, I ask people to prioritize the following 10 categories:

  1. Physical Body
  2. Spiritual Relationship
  3. Mindset
  4. Family
  5. Primary Relationship (spouse/partner)
  6. Business
  7. Personal Finances
  8. Social Life
  9. Contributions
  10. Recreation

Then I ask you to rate your level of satisfaction in each category on a scale from 1-10.  One being not satisfied and ten being totally satisfied.  Finally I ask you to create two or three objectives in each category that, if they were achieved, would make that category a 10.

Doing this exercise on a quarterly basis creates creates more balance, peace and satisfaction.  A little side note: After doing this exercise with more then 8000 people for over 16 years I can tell you that most people achieve 70% of what they write.  Isn’t that encouraging?

The Power of Letting Go

A client of mine is between a rock and a hard place. Like millions of people in America today, this person thought that buying a kind of real estate, over-leveraging, and betting on speculation was the smart thing to do. It has since blown up in her face and now she finds herself making a lot of money, but owing more than she makes every month.

The key is to let it all go, and this has been a tough process. Admitting that she has not accomplished what she set out to accomplish or that admitting that she made a mistake is the absolute critical first step. She’s embarrassed. She doesn’t want to look bad. She’s afraid of what people will think. These negative future prophecies that her mind is hitting her with keep her stuck and not moving forward. She has not been taking the action she knew she needed to take 18 months ago, so here we are today in a much worse position.

This is the same kind of behavior that I suppose gambling addicts have. They just keep thinking, the next time I’m going to win, the next month, I’m going to win, the one next one I’m going to win, and then I’ll bring it all back, and I’ll be victorious, but ultimately, it has shot her in the foot, and she has lost hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process. The key is to just admit it and let it all go, to know that if you have built it once, you can build it again, that people make mistakes. Disney even went bankrupt, and he was a pretty smart guy who built a pretty amazing thing. It’s okay to admit your failures and let it all go.

Take Action Because your Mind is not your Friend!!

Your biology is an enormous cluster of cells that have come together because survival is easier in groups.

puppet_man_hg_whtYou are not your Drunk Monkey, just like you are not your body. You are the one observing your body. Your mind, the Drunk Monkey, is just a part of your body.

Are you beating your heart right now? Are you commanding yourself to breathe? Take a moment to close your eyes, take a deep breath, hold it and observe your heart beating. Do it now.

Who is doing that? Not you! Your body operates independently of you. You are just along for the ride. Take another moment with your eyes closed and notice how your body is moving, twitching, repositioning itself and doing its thing totally independent of you. Close your eyes now and notice.

Take action on your intentions today.

Give up being right about you, your limitations, the situation, the timing and people.

Engage the mystery of life. You have no idea what is going to happen next, just take the next action and enjoy the result, positive or negative…both are just opinions.

Trust that you are on the right path, if you are reading this, then by the very nature of your intention, it is true, you are on the right path…whether you are producing results yet or not.

Take action,  in spite of the uncomfortable feelings you might have. Just make it an experiment, not important; just see if you can take the action without feeling anything.  See if you can rearrange the thoughts you have to make the actions actually feel good.  Don’t be The Drunk Monkey’s puppet.

Is your mindset killing you softly with its song?

The Drunk Monkey

The Drunk Monkey

The Drunk Monkey in your head is trying to keep you safe from a world that isn’t dangerous. Over and over again, The Drunk Monkey chants affirmations about how this person is a jerk, the economy is going to get us all and if you don’t be careful, you are going down.

If you really listen to the talking in your head, then you will see that it is not on your side. The Drunk Monkey doesn’t want you to be happy and stress free. The Drunk Monkey want to keep you safe. Anger, doubt, fear, stress, anxiety, frustration and all the other negative emotions are the tools The Drunk Monkey uses to move your body and get you in action.

Today, just notice it and don’t react.

Today, notice how the chatter and images in your head are not real.

My philosophy has developed over the last 20 years and in that time I’ve seen that awareness gives you flexibility. When you see The Drunk Monkey for what it is, you are more flexible in situations that you would normally be stuck in. That flexibility gives you more options. The person who has the most options has the most power.

Today just be aware of The Drunk Monkey. That alone is the cure to all negativity.

Is your focus making you a victim of the economy?

Monkey's got your back

Monkey's got your back

The Drunk Monkey (your mind) is a survival machine. It’s job is to protect you from possible destruction. Therefore, it is totally addicted to the news. The news organizations have realized that sensationalized news hooks their viewers Drunk Monkeys.

The news has no commitment to truth. It has a commitment to making money which means “selling advertising”. The more viewers the news organizations have, the more money these companies make. Clearly, there is a natural pull towards the sensational verses the truth.  Blogging has only made this 100 times worse because blogging, like this blog, is just someone’s opinion.

“All opinions are vanities and have no intrinsic value and are actually the result of ignorance” says Dr. David Hawkins in his book The Eye of the I.

If you are going to feel good and make the best of the current economy, then you are going to have to give up your addiction to the news and your opinion about the news.

When you focus on what Obama is doing or which bank is going under, you move out of your center. These could be important factors in your decision-making about what strategy would make the best of this economy.  Yet, to become evangelistically opposed to stuff you’ve got no control over is only negatively impacting your own psyche.  If you listen to yourself and your friends talk about the news, you will hear yourself and others giving their opinion about things that make no difference and things they have no control over.

  • What do you want?
  • Where are you going?
  • What can you do?
  • What actions can you take now?
  • Who do you need help from?
  • What is a miracle you could take a stand for occurring?

To put your focus on these kinds of questions will make a profound difference.

To spend time pondering the news and how it might possibly negatively effect you is pathetic and the mindset of the victim. (Read that again please).

To spend time espousing your opinion over tax cuts, presidential spending and banks going under after the fact is completely ridiculous and only done by people committed to being stuck and spreading the illusion that they are not in control of their life.  Illusion not truth.

You are the creator of your experience, not the victim of your circumstances. You have the power to mold the circumstances of your life first with your attitude (your perspective) and second with your actions.

So what are you going to focus on?
