Someone once told me that diseases of the mind are far more destructive than the diseases of your body. And I’d like to add to that and say that it’s so often that I see a person who has a disease in the body that started off with a disease in the mind. Now, are they directly correlated? I’m not a scientist, so I can’t tell you whether they were or not. But I can tell you that anecdotally, it occurs to me over and over that when people have physical destruction going on in their body, when their body is deteriorating, when things aren’t working, physically, in their body, it seems to be preceded by thoughts that are focused on, “Life sucks.” “I’m bad.” “Why did I do that?” Regret and guilt, these kinds of thoughts. To allow the drunk monkey in your head to have these kinds of thoughts will be so degrading to your experience.

I can think of times when I go into a slump in my own life, I find that I am naturally drawn to things that I know are not good for me. I find myself more drawn to sugar, more drawn to fat. I find myself more drawn to staying up late, not getting enough sleep. When I’m feeling down, when I’m feeling bummed out, when I’m not appreciating my world, I find it’s so much easier to skip meditation, to skip working out. When I am eating effectively, sleeping effectively, meditating, working out, when I’m doing those kinds of things, being preventative in my way of operating, my physical body responds very positively and I’m not getting sick, and things like that.

But when I’m leaving those things out, my body begins to deteriorate. So, the disease of the mind is definitely more destructive than the diseases of the body.

Michelle writes:
Matthew, you know how you always say “When you let go of what it has to be, you get the essence, even if you don’t get it. And one way of doing that is to set an intention and add “or something better” to the end?

Well, I decided that about the gallery in the OC where my art is was not working. The guy was shady, people weren’t receptive to my art, they felt it was too sexy, and it was costing me a lot of money, with no return. I decided to quit, even though I didn’t have another place to go. But I held the intention that I will have galleries with owners who love my work, with clientele who also love my work. At my final gallery show – I stopped and talked to an older gentleman, just because he looked like he needed someone to talk to. Turns out his daughter has a new lingerie store, where my art fits perfectly (I do paintings of women in lingerie). She loves my work, her clients love my work. I ‘m getting MUCH better publicity and I get window placement of my art – on the SAME street as my old gallery. I still get to participate in the monthly San Clement Art walks, and can have art events in her shop. Plus it isn’t costing me anything on a monthly basis.

I am so pleased! Once I let go of “having to be in a gallery” and just focused at wanting my art in the best possible place – the “or something better” really is better.

Thank you for sharing that with us. It has been very helpful. And every time I get a little stuck – I start doing my intentions and delegations again – and it has led to some fabulous results.

-Michelle

I started by assessing my Q1. In doing so I realized that I wasn’t living my over-arching intention for 2010. I have two signs in front of my computer screens:
1. Simplicity
2. My time is valuable

In the first quarter I set 74 intentions and goals. Hello!!! That is not simple at all. Didn’t realize this until I went through and checked off what I completed. I only completed 44%.

Second thing I realized is that The Drunk Monkey snuck into my goal-setting process at the beginning of this year. The Drunk Monkey told me my life wasn’t good enough the way it was. It told me I better get a bunch of stuff done to prove my worth. In other words, I was breaking my second overall intention for 2010 which was to recognize my value.

So for the first time in my life I’ve only got 14 goals and intentions. Here’s a sample of the difference between last quarter and this quarter.

In the category of Physical Health, last quarter I said:
1. Eat effectively
2. Reduce sugar by 90%
3. Hard core workouts 4 x a week
4. Walk dogs daily
5. Chiropractic adjustment 2 x a month
6. Stretch daily
7. Hair cut monthly

This quarter I’m simply intending one thing: I am totally happy and satisfied with every aspect of my body.

Ahhh! That feels good. Life is good. There’s no where to go. Nothing to accomplish. No reason to push. This quarter is going to be an enjoyable, effortless quarter.

How about you?

I just re-watched my video on “Will Positivity Pay My Bills” and these are my thoughts.

My point in the video is that positivity won’t solve anything. Positivity is what happens to you when you get back to the place where there is hope again. In order to do that, you have to get brutally honest about your finances and start letting stuff go, renegotiating bills and making the hard decisions. As first, that’s brutal but very soon it becomes liberating. When you start feeling liberated and your energy goes up, you start feeling more optimistic. That optimism makes you more resourceful which suddenly opens up new possibilities that weren’t there before and BAM!! Killer s*** starts happening in your life. I’ve been there several times in my life and the initial process was not fun. But the end result was worth it.

As a Life Coach, this is where I find people. Great lives are born out of negative pasts.

If your past sucks, then you benefited and your life is better today because of it. Having a negative childhood is almost always the best thing that ever happens to someone. The contrast you experience gives you new desires, new ideas, and the energy you need to create the life you want.

The negative past is a catalyst for profound change.

In that way, it is great!! But your unwillingness to accept it and appreciate it becomes a barrier to the next level of happiness and peace. You see, once you have proven to everyone that you are better then your past, you realize proving it doesn’t make you happy.

To break through the glass ceiling you must align with your past. Appreciate your past. Acknowledge that your past was exactly what you needed to become the person you are today. This will increase your sense of purpose, happiness and joy almost instantly. Acknowledge all the people that pissed you off. They were exactly what you needed to grow.

Try it today. Figure out how everything you hated about your past is exactly what you needed to become the person today. Acknowledge and love your breakdowns. Realize they made you who you are.
