You Are Not a Psychic

Originally posted December 22, 2010

If you want to be happy, then you need to stop pretending that you’re psychic. You need to quit pretending that you can look at the outside of people and see who they are. You can’t. You have no idea who people are. You look at someone and you think, “Oh, that’s what that person is.” And then, they do something different, it breaks your expectations.

When your expectations get broken, you feel anxiety, and stress, and you may even feel anger and hostility. It messes with your emotions. You need to quit pretending that you’re psychic. You’re not psychic. You can’t tell who people are. You also can’t tell what the future is.

And yet, so often, you are thinking, “Well, the future’s going to be like this.” And then, when it’s not like that, you’re depressed, disappointed, upset, and angry. You’re not psychic. You don’t know how the future is going to be. However the world turns out is how it turns out.

And your opinion about it isn’t going to change it. All your opinion will cause you is suffering. If you want to begin to experience more happiness, more joy, more peace in your life, consider giving up that you know how it’s all going to turn out. Consider giving up that you know how people are supposed to be. You don’t.

You Won’t Survive, So Stop Trying

Originally posted July 11, 2011

Listen to your mind, The Drunk Monkey and you will hear thoughts about

  • Getting ahead
  • Looking good
  • Being right
  • Figuring things out
  • Opinions, options & speculations

If you are really honest about each of these thoughts, then you see that they are about getting a mate and staying alive longer.

Major Problem:  You aren’t going to survive!  Everyone and I mean everyone is going to die!  Right?  Are you going to escape death?  No.  Then why spend time avoiding the unavoidable.  While you are studying my material, it is becoming more and more apparent that survival is an illegitimate pursuit.  There is no need to survive.

The very fact that you are reading these words tells me that you are someone who is living an amazing life. You are someone who already has a powerful influence over your world.  There is no way you could be considering living a life of happiness and success if you were in an actual survival situation.  The bottom line is you are in an opulent situation.

Let’s face it; you probably already have a car, house, clothes, electronics and many other luxury items. You are a consumer, which means that your life is not about survival.

Today Consider:  My life is about pleasure.

Your life is about getting what you want and having it all.  You are in pursuit of joy, freedom, peace, happiness and all kinds of other pleasurable feelings.  Why do you want to be in action on your most cherished dreams?  What will that powerful state give you?  More accomplishment, more achievement, more objectives completed, more creativity expression, more acquired, more expansion, more money, more, more more more more…What is the purpose of more?

To feel good.  In the end, you want to feel good.  I hate to break the news to you but, that is not a survival situation.

Consider the lengths you go to survive in non-survival situations.

Making Things Up Kills Opportunities

Originally posted July 13, 2011

The Drunk Monkey generalizes.  In other words, The Drunk Monkey makes things up.  Generalizing is a survival tool.  And a good one at that!  Touch the stove and that animal part of your physiology will direct you to not do it again.  Step into traffic and a car screeches to a halt.  Now your nervous system directs you to look both ways.  Hip hip horay for The Drunk Monkey!

Only problem is, most of your life is not dangerous.  Yet, The Drunk Monkey will associate anything that stresses you with danger.  Then it will begin to speculate that anything like the times you were stressed should be avoided.

When you are in Survival mode you spend enormous amounts of energy avoiding fantasies.  When The Drunk Monkey Generalizes you become hypnotized by a fantasy.

In other words Generalizing = You make things up!!

If you listen to the Drunk Monkey in action you will hear it Judging, assessing, quantifying, categorizing and generalizing.

The Drunk Monkey is not in the business of going for it, taking action, getting excited and living the dream!  The Drunk Monkey doesn’t care about creating pleasant experiences.  It could care less if you feel good.  It could care less about achieving your goals.

If you set a goal, then The Drunk Monkey will go to work inventing a fantasy about how it will all happen.  It will create a set of generalizations to anticipate the future.  In the mean time… The Universe/God/Source Energy/Life Force will conspire upon your behalf, stuff will start to happen, results will start to be produced…BUT…results will be produced in a way that looks different from what The Drunk Monkey anticipated.

EMERGENCY!!!!!  The Drunk Monkey gets scared because its expectations where broken.

When your expectations are broken, you’ve entered the unknown.  The Drunk Monkey hates the unknown and believes that it is a survival situation.  Your body gets pumped full of action chemicals.  You know these chemicals as emotions.  Fear, anger, upset, frustration, doubt… Your body will either attack or run away.  Either response will shoot you in the foot and stop you from achieving the results you want.

The Drunk Monkey wants to survive.  But you know the problem.  You are definitely going to die, someday.  Going for your goals is not dangerous.  Just different then what you do now.

3 Simple Actions That Make You Happy

Originally posted July 18, 2011

There are three actions that guarantee to your happiness.  Happiness is a skill that anybody can learn.  So most people believe that happiness is some kind of circumference that is outside of yourself.  For example, “When I have the perfect, then I’ll be happier.”  In other words, If this thing outside of myself happens, then I’ll be happy.  A lot of people think happiness is formula.  If I am watching the Super Bowl, having a cigar, drinking a drink with a hot girl on my side, then I’m happy. And those formulas certainly have their momentary hit, but long-term happiness is really just a skill.  It’s really a shift in the way that you’re thinking about yourself and about your circumstances in life.  Nothing needs to change to make you happy.

You Can Choose Happiness by Changing How You Take Action

1.  Devotion. It’s a way of being. Do what you do in the moment to the very best of your ability.  When your operating from that standpoint of really focusing in and doing your best, your mood elevates dramatically.  Even if you aren’t doing it exactly right.  Being intensely focused on doing your best feels good.  If you’re doing the dishes, if you’re walking the dog, if you’re playing with the kids, if you are hanging out with your spouse, if you’re with your friends, do your best and you will get positive feelings.  When you take the same actions you always take with devotion, the same action feels great!
2.  Acts of Service. Helping others, contributing, making a difference, and supporting other people in a selfless way will make you happy.  Anytime that you take your attention off of yourself, your happiness rises.  When you get out of your head and be of service to others, you get a boost to your happiness.   Consider this.  Your unhappiness is just a self-centered focus.  By focusing your attention on the service of others, you take your attention off of your problems and your happiness increases.
3.  Appreciation. What do you like about people?  What do you like about the situations you find yourself in?  Looking for what you like about yourself.  Active appreciation is anti-mind.  The mind, The Drunk Monkey, all that talking in your head, it’s not focused on what’s right, what’s working, what you like, what you’re happy about.  It’s focused on what’s wrong, what might be wrong, & what needs to be improved.  It’s a survival mechanism, so its job is to look for what doesn’t work and then focus on those things, and, of course, that makes you unhappy.Devotion, service and appreciation, those three actions will get you happy. Try them today!
